The statue of Maxwell (is that right?) has a ring on his left index finger, so maybe the ring belongs to him?

misterIG responds:

Yeah, that's right. Good notes. Thanks for the help!

What is the story behind this?

CobGoblin responds:

It's part of some larger worldbuilding I'm doing in advance of some game projects! In this specific one, the flag-bearer is a member of the Riverlands Resistance, a loose coalition of villagers in revolt against their current feudal lords.

President Green is spending tax dollars to improve his office space.

Really like the style and how a lot of the objects in the room are from basic shapes :)

misterIG responds:

Thanks!

it must be cold up there. The cosmological horror should wear a sweater o-o

CobGoblin responds:

It is infinite and horrific and would be grateful for an equally great and terrible sweater.

Question: What is your process for planning and painting the background? I'm not really great at them so I'm trying to gather some advice.

Good work blazing!

blazingpumpkinart responds:

Well, that usually depends on how much the client pays and how vague their idea is. If payment is the minimum and the idea is general, i do a photobash and paint on top adding ideas i think would work and hoping the perspective works.
If it´s more expensive and clear enough to compensate for the time, i draw and paint it all from scratch.

To decide what i will paint, i choose the pallet before i start painting and make sure the armor reflections mix with the type of pallet i picked.
The best way to decide a background when you don´t know where to start is looking for inspiration at people who have solved similar issues or find a proper photo and imagine what it needs to be added to mix with your imagination.

What kind of technique were you trying out?

BoyPorcelain responds:

Typically I put the flat colours in, add shadows, tone, then lighting effects and clean it all up.

This time however I started with the darkest colour first (the colour of the face in shadow) then slowly added more and more light, kind of like building it up from a dark silhouette to how it looks now. Quite a useful way to do it, if you understand what is going to be lit you know what goes where and don't spend too much time trying to perfect it. If you want examples of this being used, here are two artists that do something similar:

Any reason for the recent monochrome space-themed pixel art?

CobGoblin responds:

It's a good excercise in minimalism, which largely defines pixels as a medium. But also I'm just interested in making a game with the look! A lot easier to develop all the assets if one's working alone, not having to worry about cohesion in color.

The landing is cool, but the impact is sluggish

CobGoblin responds:

Yeah, definitely needs to be sped up. The stomp doesn't land quite right.

Maybe the lock could have a small bit more highlights on the lower part. It feels a little flat. Anyways, good luck on the game you're working on :)

CobGoblin responds:

Thanks! I definitely agree, I think I got distracted by the outline of it. More anti-aliasing around the keyhole would probably have been good too.

is the light in morse code?

CobGoblin responds:

I considered trying to do that, just didn't due to time constraints lol.
